A single stop-loss is not enough. Professional traders protect their capital on three levels simultaneously — from the individual trade to the overall portfolio.

Layer 1: Trade Level

Every single trade has its own protection:

Stop-loss: Maximum loss per trade (1-2% of portfolio)
Take-profit: Minimum RRR of 2:1 defined before entry
Position size: Calculated by the 1% rule based on stop-loss distance
Time limit: Trade closed if it does not move in expected direction after 5 days

Layer 2: Sector Level

No sector may account for more than 25% of total portfolio. Additionally:

Maximum sector correlation: When 3+ positions are in the same sector, average correlation must be below 0.6
Sector stop: When a sector loses more than 8% total, all positions in that sector are halved

Layer 3: Portfolio Level

The ultimate shield for the overall portfolio:

Maximum drawdown trigger: At 15% portfolio drawdown, all positions reduced to 50%
VIX-based risk reduction: VIX above 25 = half position sizes, VIX above 35 = hold existing positions only, no new ones
Cash minimum: Always maintain at least 10% cash for unexpected opportunities
Daily loss limit: Maximum 3% portfolio loss per day — trading paused afterward

How AI Orchestrates All Three Layers
