What Is Earnings Season?

The reporting season lasts approximately 6 weeks after each quarter end. The most important periods:

What Moves the Price?

Not the absolute numbers matter, but the deviation from expectations:

Beat: Revenue and/or earnings above analyst expectations → price increase
Miss: Below expectations → price decline
In-line: As expected → often price decline (positive surprise was priced in)

Equally important: The guidance. What does management say about next quarter? An earnings increase with simultaneous guidance reduction can cause the stock to fall despite good numbers.

3 Strategies for Earnings Season

1. Pre-Earnings Momentum

Many stocks rise in the 5-10 days before earnings (earnings run-up). Expectations drive the price. Strategy: Buy 7 days before earnings, sell 1 day before. Works especially for stocks with historically positive surprises.

2. Post-Earnings Drift

Stocks that positively surprise often continue rising for 20-40 days (Post-Earnings Announcement Drift — PEAD). Buy the day after a positive surprise, hold 3-4 weeks. Academically well-documented effect.

3. Straddle Strategy (Options)

When you do not know the direction but expect strong movement: Buy both a call and a put simultaneously (straddle). You profit when price moves strongly in either direction. Caution: Option premiums are significantly elevated before earnings (implied volatility crush).
