Business cycle: Commodities perform strongest in the mid-expansion phase.

Why Commodities Are Difficult

Contango: Futures-based commodity ETFs systematically lose through rolling costs.
No cash flows: Like gold — commodities pay nothing.
Political risks: OPEC, trade embargoes, sanctions can change prices overnight.

The Optimal Combination

For a balanced portfolio we recommend:

7-10% gold (via gold ETC) — permanent crisis protection
5-8% commodities (via commodity stocks or broadly diversified ETF) — cyclical inflation protection
Total: 12-18% alternative assets alongside stocks and bonds

Bottom Line: Gold and commodities are not return machines — they are insurance. And like any good insurance, you gladly pay the premium (foregone stock returns) when the claim (crisis, inflation) occurs.
