Macroeconomic indicators are the vital signs of the economy. Reading them tells you whether the economy is healthy, getting sick, or recovering — and lets you position your portfolio accordingly.

Leading Indicators: What Comes Next?

PMI (Purchasing Managers Index)

The PMI is the most reliable leading economic indicator. Based on surveys of purchasing managers in manufacturing and services.

Above 50: Expansion — economy is growing
Below 50: Contraction — economy is shrinking
Trend more important than level: A PMI of 52 falling from 55 is more concerning than a PMI of 49 rising from 45

Yield Curve

The difference between long-term (10-year) and short-term (2-year) interest rates. The yield curve has predicted every one of the last 8 recessions.

Normal curve (positive): Long-term rates higher than short-term → healthy economy
Flat curve: Little difference → uncertainty, possible slowdown
Inverted curve (negative): Short-term rates higher → recession likely in 12-18 months

Consumer Confidence Index

Measures consumer sentiment. High = consumers spend money, good for stocks. Falling = consumers save, bad for cyclical stocks.

Coincident Indicators: Where Are We Now?

Employment Data

Non-Farm Payrolls (US), unemployment rate, wage growth. Caution: Labor market is a lagging indicator — when unemployment rises, the recession is usually already here.

Industrial Production

Measures manufacturing output. Directly correlated with corporate earnings and stock markets.

Lagging Indicators: What Happened?

CPI/Inflation

Backward-looking — measures price increases of recent months. Important for assessing central bank reaction, but not a leading indicator.

GDP Growth

Also retrospective — shows what the economy did last quarter. Useful for phase determination, not for forecasts.

PMI: Rising or falling? → Determines whether you trade aggressively or defensively
Yield curve: Normal, flat, or inverted? → Determines your time horizon
VIX: Below 20, 20-30, above 30? → Determines your position sizes
Dollar Index (DXY): Rising or falling? → Affects commodities and exporters

How AI Integrates Macro Data
