Leverage does not only multiply gains — it multiplies losses too. Anyone who does not understand the mechanics behind margin trading risks more than poor returns — they risk total loss.

What Is Margin?

Margin is the collateral you deposit to open a leveraged position. If you open a 10,000-euro position with 5:1 leverage, you only need 2,000 euros of your own capital. The broker lends you the remaining 8,000 euros.

The Leverage Trap

The problem: 5:1 leverage means a 2% price move against you equals a 10% loss on your invested capital. A 20% move against you — and your capital is gone.

Specifically:

Without leverage: 10,000 euros invested, price falls 10% → 1,000 euro loss (10% of your capital)
With 5:1 leverage: 2,000 euro margin for 10,000 euro position, price falls 10% → 1,000 euro loss (50% of your capital)
With 10:1 leverage: 1,000 euro margin for 10,000 euro position, price falls 10% → 1,000 euro loss (100% of your capital = total loss)

Margin Call: The Nightmare

A margin call occurs when your account value falls below the minimum margin. The broker demands you immediately deposit additional capital. If you do not respond, the broker forcibly closes your positions — often at the worst possible time.

In the EU since 2018 there is negative balance protection: You cannot lose more than your account balance. But this does not protect against losing all your invested capital.

What Leverage Is Acceptable?

1:1 (no leverage): For beginners and long-term investments. No margin risk.
2:1: Conservatively leveraged. A 50% price move against you leads to total loss — extremely unlikely for blue chips.
5:1: Moderate leverage for experienced traders with strict risk management.
10:1 and higher: Only for professional traders with years of experience. Not recommended for retail investors.

CFDs: The Popular Leverage Trap

CFDs (Contracts for Difference) are the most popular leveraged product among retail investors — and simultaneously the most dangerous. 76-89% of all retail CFD investors lose money (mandatory disclosure of every CFD broker). Reasons:

Overnight financing costs eat up long-term positions
Tight stop-losses are triggered by normal market volatility
Psychological tendency to compensate leveraged losses with even more leverage
