Professional traders constantly talk about the RRR — the Risk-Reward Ratio. It is the only number that truly matters if you want to be profitable long-term.

What Is the RRR?

The Risk-Reward Ratio relates potential profit to potential loss of a trade:

RRR = Potential Gain / Potential Risk

An RRR of 3:1 means: You risk 1 euro to gain 3 euros. An RRR of 1:1 means: Profit and loss potential are equal.

Why RRR Matters More Than Hit Rate

Here is the surprising insight: You can be highly profitable with a hit rate of only 30% — if your RRR is right.

Example with RRR 3:1 and 30% hit rate over 100 trades:

30 winners x 300 euros = 9,000 euros gains
70 losers x 100 euros = 7,000 euros losses
Net: +2,000 euros profit

Conversely: An RRR of 1:3 with 70% hit rate:

70 winners x 100 euros = 7,000 euros gains
30 losers x 300 euros = 9,000 euros losses
Net: -2,000 euros loss — despite 70% hit rate!

How to Calculate the RRR

Before the Trade

Entry price: 100 euros
Stop-loss: 95 euros → Risk = 5 euros (5%)
Take-profit: 115 euros → Reward = 15 euros (15%)
RRR = 15 / 5 = 3:1

The Minimum RRR Rule

As a rule of thumb: Never take a trade with an RRR below 2:1. With an RRR of 2:1, you only need a 34% hit rate to be profitable. That is a very low bar.

RRR in Practice: AI Signals

At the Dieter Investment Club, the AI automatically calculates the RRR for each signal. Signals with RRR below 2:1 are not issued at all. At high confidence (above 85%), we accept RRRs from 1.5:1, because the higher hit rate compensates for the lower RRR.

Common RRR Mistakes

Take-profit too tight: Taking profits too early out of fear — this destroys the RRR
Stop-loss too wide: Giving too much room to avoid being stopped out — increases risk disproportionately
Changing RRR after entry: Moving the stop-loss because the trade goes against you — classic beginner mistake

Bottom Line: Calculate the RRR BEFORE every trade. If it is not at least 2:1, skip the trade — no matter how convincing the signal looks.
